School of Sanctuary
We are applying for a “School of Sanctuary”
At Hendon School, we celebrate diversity and champion inclusivity, both within our community and beyond. We value the richness that comes from the blend of cultures and experiences that shape our school. As a safe and welcoming space for all, we stand as a refuge for those in need of sanctuary.
What is a School of Sanctuary
A School of Sanctuary is part of a national initiative dedicated to making the UK a place of safety, welcome, and support for those fleeing violence and persecution.
As a School of Sanctuary, we commit to deepening the education of our students, staff, and wider community on the realities of seeking sanctuary. We strive to foster understanding, empathy, and active inclusion, ensuring that everyone plays a role in welcoming those in need into our school family.
At Hendon School we aim to:
- Create a welcoming and inclusive culture for all, with a particular focus on refugees, asylum seekers, and other sanctuary seekers.
- Foster empathy and understanding by educating our community about the experiences of displaced people, empowering everyone to play a role in offering sanctuary.
- Amplify the voices of those seeking sanctuary, ensuring their experiences and perspectives are heard, valued, and respected.
- Provide practical support and resources to help sanctuary seekers feel safe, supported, and able to thrive within our school.
- Celebrate cultural diversity by embracing and learning from the rich backgrounds and experiences of all members of our community.
- Work in partnership with local and national organisations to strengthen our commitment to being a true School of Sanctuary.
