Art

We encourage students to be independent, creative and receptive to new ideas. Students throughout the key stages are exposed to a wide range of art making experiences using exciting media; drawing, painting, mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, photography and digital photography
Our facilities consist of two large classrooms and one dedicated sixth form art room, two traditional darkrooms, two digital suites, animation, film making, printmaking, painting, sculpture and ceramics. The staff within the department all have varied specialisms; drawing, painting, photography and sculpture.
Students have 3 lessons each week
GCSE Art and Design provides students with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore their interests in ways that are both personally relevant and developmental in nature.
This two unit specification enables students to develop their ability to actively engage in the processes of Art and Design – to build creative skills through learning and doing, to develop imaginative and intuitive ways of working and develop knowledge and understanding of media, materials and technologies in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures.
Assessment is by Unit 1: Portfolio of Work (Controlled Assessment) 60% and Unit 2: Externally Set Task 40%

Year 11 |
Sense of place A continuation of year 10, with students creating their own works inspired by their researched artists using primary sources.

Externally Set Assignment (exam project) Exam questions are released in the new year. Students select the question to which they wish to respond. Students then investigate artists, with own personal responses in preparation for exam piece. |
Exam A 10 hour exam is completed over 2 school days. |
Outside the classroom
To maximise student’s exposure to contemporary art, we regularly organise trips into central London, to galleries and exhibitions. These provide students with valuable learning experiences, which inspire and impact on their work. We also encourage students to independently participate in events across London, such as The Big Draw.
Many of our ex-students have followed their passion for art and photography by completing foundation courses, then progressing to Bachelor Degree in Illustration, Fine Art and Design. Several of our former students work within the creative industry and have accredited their experiences as art students at Hendon for their success.

Careers
Creative Arts subjects are integral for the development of the identified skills needed for the 21st Century. Students learn about culture and community through a study of the Creative Arts. Each art form has its own unique skills, concepts and a capacity to inspire and enrich lives. Studying Art and Design at AS and A2 level provides students with a fantastic platform for a Foundation Art Course, followed by BA in Art, Design or Art History.
The career prospects are varied including: Graphic Designer, Curator, Education, Product Designer, Fashion Designer, Animator, Architect, Landscape Gardener, Games Designer, Advertising, Set Designer, Web Designer, Illustrator and Art Therapist.
