Course Outline:

AS Japanese

The course is divided into focussed learning areas to ensure that students are given the opportunity to cover all aspects of the Japanese AS curriculum.  These areas include; kanji, translation skills, comprehensions, essay writing and grammar.  We use a wide range of learning and teaching techniques and exciting and stimulating challenges and activities to motivate our students, to deepen their learning and to promote independent thinking skills. We ensure our students are well-supported, but encourage them to take risks and to ask challenging questions.

A2 Japanese

This course builds on the skills developed during the AS course.  Again, in order to ensure that all areas of the curriculum are covered in depth, we use focussed learning areas.  These include; kanji, translation skills, comprehensions, essay writing and grammar.  Students also take on two independent research projects.  One is on a designated city in Japan and the other is on a famous Japanese author’s short stories.  Students will write essays in Japanese on these topics for their A2 paper.  If the students choose, they can organise a trip to Japan to further their research into their Japanese city.

Skills / Aptitudes required to be successful in this course:

You need to have a love of Japanese and a desire for challenge.  You need to be motivated and willing to work hard.  You need to enjoy writing and reading Japanese in particular as there are no listening or speaking elements in this exam.  You also need to have the aptitude to work independently.  This means, for example, the ability to review vocabulary and grammar on your own after each lesson.  You need to enjoy learning kanji (there are 400 in total for AS and A2) and you need to be willing to be adventurous and experimental with your writing.
