About the Course:
Recession, interest rates, inflation, GDP, unemployment, budget deficit are words that have been thrown around frequently.
What do they all mean to us? How do they impact us?
"Economics is the study of how the economy should share it's resources"
Hence- should about 300million people in Sub Saharan Africa live with less than 1 dollar a day? How should the resources be shared? What should the government do for this? What should all the world leaders do to sort this out?
To what extent would this make a difference in the world? Would it affect you? Would it affect me?
Does buying goods from Primark affect this poverty? Do we cause it then?
As it can be seen Economics relates to the everyday happenings in the world. Economics makes the news relevant and reading the newspaper interesting. It is practical and studying it involves using current affairs and a lot of discussion.

ADVANCED LEVEL

The course
The aim of the course is to enable students to gain an understanding of how our economy works. It involves applying theoretical concepts to issues such as the credit crunch, interest rates, inflation, unemployment, trade, development, pay, production and consumption. 
In Year 12 there is an introduction to key micro and macroeconomic concepts.
In Year 13 we take a more in depth look at issues such as development, labour economics and industrial economics.

Entry requirements
Five GCSEs at grade C or above.
B’s in English
B in Mathematics

Assessment
Written examinations are held in June of both Year 12, as well as in January and June in Year 13.
We follow the OCR syllabus.

 

AS Economics

 

Unit Title - Markets in Action (F581)

This is a micro-economics unit that ensures candidates gain an appreciation of the allocation of resources, the market model and selected aspects of what makes markets efficient or sees them fail

 

Unit Title - The National and International Economy (F582)

This unit sees candidates introduced to how levels of macro-economic activity are determined and also investigates key national and international economic indicators, policies and problems.

 

Unit Title - Transport Economics (F584)

The focus here is on economic concepts and issues which are applied to a variety of transport contexts. Transport industries are considered in terms of models of market structure, particularly with a consideration of contestability.

 

Unit Title - The Global Economy (F585)

This unit provides the conceptual framework for the understanding, analysis, and evaluation of macro-economic performance in national, regional and global contexts. The key topics are comparative economic performance indicators and policies, trade & integration, development & sustainability and the economics of globalisation.

Why choose GCSE Business Studies?

Business Studies gives the opportunity to develop the ability to apply business knowledge and understanding to a wide range of business and current affairs situations.

It is a subject that requires students to be committed to learning real business concepts, which would help them understand a range of issues including business decisions, world events and the economy. It is a useful subject for anyone interested in starting, running or working in any business setting.

Method of assessment:

This is a modular course consisting of 3 units:

Unit 1 – Marketing and Enterprise (controlled assessment unit)- 25% of GCSE grade

Unit 2 – Business and People- 25% of GCSE grade

Unit 3 – Production, Finance and External Business Environment- 50% of GCSE grade

This is marketing project based on a scenario created by OCR. An important part of the work will involve students collecting research about how businesses market themselves. This will involve internet research and some first hand research, such as interviews and giving out questionnaires. The rest of the marks will come from students writing up conclusions based on their research in exam conditions.

Post 16 Progression:

 

Studying this subject will allow a student to progress on to most A level courses including Economics, Law, Business, ICT and Humanities.

The curriculum:

Key Stage 3

As part of the Expressive Arts faculty we have successfully piloted innovative cross-curricular projects in Years 7 and 8. These projects allow the students to have lessons with two different teachers, each bringing their own specialism to the activities. The pupils have the opportunity of really flexing their creative muscles, working as a team, and making independent decisions about their learning.
The lessons in Years 7, 8 and 9 are fun, diverse and accessible to all students. The ranges of topics covered ranges from Samba to Film Music to Rap and beyond, each building up skills in performing, creating and listening. As the department expands, every student will also learn keyboard, guitar and drum-kit skills for the first time this year, as well as studio production techniques.

Key Stage 4

At Hendon the uptake of Music GCSE has effectively doubled in the last 3 years, year-on-year increasing from 16, through 27 to 34 in the current cohort. This is testament to the excellent work at Key Stage 3, and the high profile of Music around the school. We take pride in our reputation as an inclusive course, allowing any enthusiastic student to enjoy and achieve at GCSE, regardless of the musical background or experience.
Our results have been consistently above the school and national average for the last 3 years, with 87% of students achieving A*-C (well over half getting a B or above!).

Key Stage 5

We offer A-level courses in both Music and Music Technology, and for the first time this year, have attracted students from neighbouring school to come and study these courses at Hendon.
All of our Year 13 Music students who finished school last June have gone on to study Music at university.

The facilities
2 large classrooms, well-resources for fun and active Music lessons, and one about to be fitted with a class set of Music Production PCs
3 practice rooms, which are busy from early in the morning until closing time with students working independently and receiving peripatetic lessons
A fully-functioning recording studio, staffed by a technician one day a week, and used for recording and composing by a steady stream of pupils, working in all musical styles.
We regularly burst out of the department with performances in the courtyard, hall, gym, amphitheatre and school field!

Instrumental/Voice Lessons
Highly-valued, and currently oversubscribed in all instruments
Heavily subsidised by the school: Hendon thoroughly believes in offering an enriching musical experience for every child, and so the school pays 2/3 of the cost of every lesson.
Given by an army of experienced and professional musicians who have graced many a world stage: from the Barbican to Glastonbury! These musi8cal role-models also participate in the extra-curricular groups in the school.

There are 2 so far this year: one to see a rare performance of a contemporary work at the Southbank, the other to watch a world-class orchestra in rehearsal.
We regularly consult student voice about which trips to run: We have a Students Arts Council and have just launched a ‘Music Managers’ scheme.

About Department:

The   Photography Dept at Hendon School has produced outstanding work at GSCE/AS/A Level in past years. Our students become proficient at SLR darkroom techniques, the use of experimental digital media (Adobe Photoshop, Moviemaker) and studio photography. These technical skills enable them to express their artistic ideas and visions confidently. We facilitate the exploration of photographic genres: Still Life, Portraiture and Landscape/Location through differentiated projects. Students discover how photographers’ work has been shaped by ideas that are influenced by specific time periods, historical events and cultural aspects. Students develop visual literacy through analytical activities and research tasks which are linked to contemporary photographers’ practice.

Past students are now successfully studying towards a degree in Photography at a variety of art and design courses: London College of Communication, Camberwell College of Art & Design, Westminster, Nottingham Trent and Bournemouth Universities. We are always impressed with our students’ confidence and welcome them back proudly for teaching and tutoring sessions to inspire our new generation of enthusiastic photography students.

We are organising, in collaboration with the Hendon School Library, a series of exhibitions that celebrate our students’ photographic work to ensure exposure to a wider school audience.

We take regular trips to exhibitions in London so students can experience original photographic prints in a museum context.

We are part of the advisory committee of the internationally renowned Photographers’ Gallery in Central London and our current Year 11 GCSE students present opinions on photographic work in the TEEN TALKS series. Our Year 10 students will be involved in a research project about Visual Literacy, which is organised by the Photographers’ Gallery and funded by the John Lyons Charity.

About Department:

This is a dynamic department with significant links to the creative industry. Three of the drama staff had careers as actors before becoming teachers and the HOD was Producer of Youth Theatre Programmes for the National Theatre before taking up her post at Hendon. This is also a training department with a long association with Central School of Speech and Drama who continually place their P.G.C.S.E students, with R.A.D.A whose acting students have an  annual residency and from this year, with Middlesex University.  Underpinning all of the work within the department is a commitment to developing  skills, confidence, imagination and understanding through performance . Drama is taught throughout the school and has outstanding  G.C.S.E  results. Drama and Theatre Studies is also a popular choice at ‘A’level.  Students enjoy a range of theatre experiences from trips into London’s West End and South Bank to see shows such as ‘Hedda Garbler’ and ‘War Horse’ to fringe venues such as ‘Electra’ at the Gate Theatre and ‘Faustus ‘ at Manchester Royal Exchange.  A range of workshops from industry professionals are programmed throughout the year. All pupils, staff, family, friends as well as theatre professionals have the opportunity to be part of the Hendon Community Theatre. The 2012 project was a specially commissioned epic reimagining of the legend of King Arthur. Five world class writers Philip Ridley, Mark Ravenhill , Dominic Francis, Judith Johnson and Nick Drake each wrote an episode that were performed in promenade across the site. The 2013 Community Play is a retelling of ‘The Willow Pattern’ and will be staged in a Big Top Circus Tent in July.

KS3  Year 7

  • Pupils learn to work confidently in groups using a range of drama techniques to explore situations and devise dramas for different purposes.
  • Plan and structure plays that make use of techniques and forms to express their ideas
  • Actively interpret the work of playwrights
  • Write and perform their own simple scripts
  • Select and operate a range of simple theatre technologies
  • Learn lines, collaborate with others and organise simple presentations
  • Experiment with their voices and movement, to create or present different characters in performance
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some theatre traditions from different times and places e.g. Elizabethan Theatre
  • Discuss the themes or issues in the drama and the way they are presented
  • Reflect on and evaluate their own and other pupils’ work, suggest improvements and use correct basic theatre terminology

Year 8

  • Pupils explore and interpret ideas, issues and relationships and turn it into drama using appropriate forms e.g. documentary, conventions such as the aside

  • Select a range of available technical resources for dramatic effects, eg Sound and lighting
  • Interpret and rehearse extracts from a range of scripted plays

  • Improve and refine their acting, directing or technical contribution to the rehearsal process

Year 9

  • Devise dramas in various forms based on a range of challenging issues  and themes such as knife crime, mental health, global warming

  • Create and represent clearly defined characters from the written word, add depth and consider motivation
  • Organise and present performances in a range of styles (e.g. melodramatically, naturalistically)

  • Select and control appropriate vocal and movement skills, with some subtlety and develop them in rehearsal

Drama and Theatre Studies Edexcel (6DR01)

 

Unit 1 (40% of the total AS marks/20% of the total GCE marks)

This unit introduced students to the content of plays written for the theatre. They will learn how to analyse plays in a variety of ways so they become familiar with the way written plays can be interpreted for realisation in performance.

 

Assessment:

This internally assessed unit requires students to explore two contrasting play texts, chosen by the centre, in a practical and active way. At least one of the plays must be explored in the light of a recognised theatre practitioner.

 

A DVD of one session of the practical work is sent off for moderation. A set of exploration notes per student needs to be submitted.

 

Students are also required to experience a live theatre performance and submit an evaluation.

 

Unit 2: Theatre text in Performance (6 DRO2)

Externally assessed 60% of the total AS marks/30% of the total GCE marks

The unit offers students the chance to demonstrate skills in a performance environment. The knowledge and understanding gained during the study of two plays in unit 1 can now be applied with a view to delivering a performance to an audience.

 

Assessment

This is an externally assessed unit. The first section requires students to offer either a monologue or duologue. The second section requires students to contribute to a performance of a professionally published play by a known writer.

 

A2

Unit 3 Exploration of Dramatic Performance

Unit 3 – 40% of the total A2 marks/20% of the total GCE marks

This unit requires the creation of a unique and original piece of theatre. The knowledge and understanding gained in the AS units can now be applied to a created production. Students will be assessed on both the process of creation and the finished product in the form of a performance to an invited audience.

 

Assessment

Students will be assessed on the research and development of their work as well as the final performance in front of an identified audience. They are also required to complete an evaluation on both the process and performance work.

 

Unit 4 Theatre Text in Context 60% of the total A2 marks/30% of the total GCE marks

 

Content summary:

This externally written unit requires the detailed study of one set play text and one prescribed historical period of theatrical development.

 

 

Assessment

This externally assessed unit takes the form of a 2 hour and 30 minute written paper in three sections.

 

Sections A and B require students to explore one play (this year we’ve chosen Faustus and will see a production of it at The Globe Theatre), from a choice of three set play texts, from the point of view of a director in both an academic and practical way.

 

In Section C a selection must be made of one from a choice of three historic periods of theatre history. A live performance of a play from the chosen period must be experienced and evaluated and a comparison made with the original staging conditions of the play.

Other Information:

The spacious drama studios are situated in the new block. Most performances happen in other locations around the Hendon Site. The department has a reputation for creating exciting performance environments.
