About our Faculty
The Science Faculty is a dynamic and ambitious faculty with high aspirations for all our students.  From Years 7 to 13, students benefit from high quality teaching and excellent new facilities and we aim to inspire students through challenging and interactive lessons.   Our teachers have a wide range of teaching experience and are supported by a specialist team of laboratory technicians.

In terms of our resources, our 7 laboratories were fully refurbished in 2013 and provide an excellent learning environment.  We also have a dedicated computer suite and additional teaching space.  We recently won an award for funding from the Wolfson Foundation, and this has enabled us to renew much of our scientific equipment.

Our curriculum is divided  into Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8), Key Stage 4 (Years 9 to 11)  and Key Stage 5 (Post 16).  In addition we provide numerous Extra- Curricular opportunities for students, including trips, visiting speakers, regular Science and STEM clubs and our annual Science Week.

Key Stage 3
Students in Years 7 and 8 follow a programme of study written by members of the Faculty. The programme is based on the Exploring Science Key Stage 3 course.  The Year 7 course has recently been updated to meet the requirements of the new National Curriculum.

In Year 7, students are taught Science in mixed ability classes.  Students are then assigned their Year 8 classes according to ability.   Students receive one piece of Science homework per week.

Students are formally assessed once a half term.   Assessments are either practical based Assignments or end of topic tests.   The students record their levels and personal targets in their exercise books, and their progress is tracked throughout the academic year. Teachers work with students to help them make good progress and develop their scientific knowledge and skills.  Exercise books are regularly marked and assess students their own work.

Lessons are usually planned around a practical task, and the faculty has excellent new laboratories and equipment to help facilitate the students’ learning.

Students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities, such as Science Club, STEM club and Science Week.

Key Stage 4
In year 9, students complete a transition course to prepare for GCSE courses.  The course prepares students for specific investigative and analytical  skills, and provides them with a secure grounding in some of the key principles of Science. (eg Photosynthesis, Forces and Motion, Reactivity patterns etc)

Towards the end of Year 9, students are offered a choice of Key Stage 4 Science courses based on their ability and attainment.  The majority of students study Double Science GCSE, which consists of Science GCSE in Year 10 and Additional Science GCSE in Year 11.    The more able students are offered the opportunity to study for separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics (Triple Science).   The GCSE examination board is AQA.

In Years 10 and 11, students are regularly assessed, and teachers closely monitor student progress.    On average students receive two Science homework tasks per week, but they are also encouraged to work independently to help with preparation for examinations.  Students can choose from a wide variety of resources either paper based, on line or on the School intranet site.

Key Stage 5
Students who gain good grades at GCSE can then progress on to an A level course in either Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  The Biology examination board is Edexcel and Chemistry and Physics follow the OCR A specifications.  The Science Faculty also offer BTEC qualifications in Health and Social Care including the Level 3 National Award and BTEC First Certificate.   More details about Post 16 courses are given on the Sixth Form (HS6) page of the website.
