About the Department: 

Sociology is the study of society, and how it influences people and their actions, as well as the way in which people influence society. Students can study the study the subject at GCSE and A-Level.

 

About the Courses:

 

GCSE:

Students study the AQA specification at GCSE. The course is split into two Units, both of which are examined at the end of Year 11. The units consist of topics including Families, Education, Crime and Deviance, Social Inequality and Mass Media.

Collins Sociology GCSE for AQA - Student Book by Pauline Wilson and Allan Kidd

 

A-Level:

Students build on their prior learning at GCSE, studying some topics in more depth and introducing new and interesting topics. There are two exams in year 12 and two exams in year 13. In the AS course, students study Families and Households and Education and Sociological Methods. Students have the opportunity to take part in a trip to another educational establishment as part of their learning.

At A2, students look at Beliefs in Society, Crime and Deviance and Theory and Methods. There is the opportunity to look at a range of belief groups, with a visit to a Scientology centre.
