Name of Department: Psychology

Members of Staff:

Miss H. Chamberlain - Head of Psychology

Miss D. Feely - Teacher of Psychology

Miss D. Bitlice - Teacher of Psychology

About the Department:

In Psychology, our aim is to create and develop critical, analytical thinkers. In light of this, we encourage students to generate their own research investigations where they include an aim, hypothesis, the type of experimental method (i.e Lab/Field/Natural), the sampling technique and any arising ethical issues. Research is central to Psychology, and research suggests that students perform better in Psychology exams that require ‘application’ when they have completed their own research investigations.

In Psychology lessons, students spend a significant amount of time working in groups; this is to ensure that students are sharing vital information and are able to learn from one another. For example, one of the key topics in AS Psychology is ‘Social Influence’ (Obedience) – students are put into groups where they can argue for and against Milgram’s study being unethical. They are then given the opportunity to present this debate in the form of a court case.

About the Course:

A-Level:

Students study the AQA A specification. In year 12 they are given the opportunity to visit London Zoo where they receive a session titled ‘Phobias’ – this is designed to develop their knowledge on individual differences, an integral aspect of Unit 2. Similarly, students in year 13 attend an institution that caters for those suffering from mental health illnesses, such as Depression and Schizophrenia. This trip is extremely useful in extending and challenging the knowledge acquired in Unit 4.

Students are taught six separate topics in year 12 and a further six separate topics in year 13. There are 2 exams taken at the end of the AS course, and a further 2 exams taken at the end of the A2 course.

The following textbooks are recommended resources:
