Exam Board: OCR

Course Outline:

 

Computing gives learners a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works. It provides excellent preparation for higher study and employment in Computer Science and develops critical thinking, analysis and problem-solving skills.

 

Unit A451 – Computer systems and programming

                                                                                                                                                   

Computer systems and programming is theory based. It will enable candidates the opportunity to study the complete body of knowledge about computer systems. This includes computer hardware and software, representation of data in computer systems, databases, computer communications and networking as well as programming.

 

Assessment consists of one written paper which is 1 hour 30 mins. It is worth 80 marks or 40% of one GCSE qualification.                                                                 

                                                                                                                                                                                       Unit A452 – Practical investigation    

                                                                                                                                               

This is a practical unit. Candidates carry out a practical investigation of a topic chosen from a set of options supplied by OCR. It is controlled assessment over approx. It is controlled assessment over approx. 20 hours and is worth 45 marks or 30% of the qualification.

 

Unit A453 – Programming project   

 

This is a programming unit. Candidates create solutions to computing tasks from a set of options supplied by OCR.. It is controlled assessment over approx. 20 hours and is worth 45 marks or 30% of the qualification.

 

Minimum Entry requirement:

 

Level 7c in Maths

Merit in ICT Digital Literacy Certification (Year 9)

 

Method of assessment:

Unit A451

Exam: 40%

 

Unit A451 and Unit A451

Controlled Assessment: 60%

Post 16 Progression:

AS/A level Computing at Hendon School (Grade A in English and Grade A Maths)

Any other further education course that requires ICT skills or qualifications.
